Back to Overview

41-10   The SMJ railway bridge from a point near to the turntable.  A new piece of Station Road will cover the ground near the camera as it swings to the left towards Tiffield and connects with the road to Blisworth Arm.  That road was closed for many weeks - it used to pass over the SMJ bridge and then immediately over the railway bridge off the right hand side of this photograph.

Please refer to the last map on the Overview page to see what happened to Station Road.

41-11  Taken from the SMJ bridge towards the works.  Visible is the  preparation to span a bridge for the bypass over both a new section of Station Road and the railway.  The site of the SMJ turntable can be seen in the foreground.

41-12   Taken from a similar vantage point a few weeks later.  Now the ramp for the new section of Station Road can be clearly seen.  The turntable has been filled in and that land will be returned to the railway - which now has, predictably, reverted to dense scrub.
41-13   Taken yet again from a similar vantage point.  This shows the new section of the road completed and ready for service.  The new bypass bridge is nearing completion too.
41-14   A view of the works shown in the previous few pictures taken from near the new bypass bridge.
41-17    The old Station Road was cut into two sections (see last map on the Overview page). On the west side of the bypass is a row of cottages once owned by the railways (SMJ cottages).  The cottages now stand in a short cul-de-sac as shown in the next picture.
41-18   This picture shows earth beginning to be ramped at the end of a short section of the old Station Road.
41-35   This was the view along the old Station Rd by the cottages, taken on the 22nd April 1990.  The view has gone - replaced with . . .
41-19   Although shown near-completed in image 41-13, this shows the new section of Station Road from the Blisworth side of the bridge ie. just a few dozen yards to the right of the view above.
41-20   The bypass also has to cross the canal about 100 yards north of the railways and Station Road.  This shows preparations for a new bridge and ramped earth to the left.  The concrete elements which cross the canal as shown in this picture are not the final bridge which will eventually be much higher.  Perhaps someone can remember what went on there!
41-21   The foundations for the canal bridge are approaching completion.
41-22   With the bridge nearly complete, an earth ramp is extended south (to the left) to join up with the (out-of-sight) bridge over the railway.  The remains of a low bridge in the foreground are what's left of the bridge for the railway branch line from the station to Northampton.
41-27   Further north from the bridges mentioned above, the new road runs to join the motorway at the Rothersthorpe service station where the new access is designated Junction 15A.  This straight section of road runs along the compacted ground which was once used by the railway branch line to Northampton.
