Cottages on the green which now are alongside the Stoke Road but before the canal tunnel was dug they looked out on a common land "green", beyond which flowed a stream that ran down to the watermill. The stream is now known as Fisher Brook but was then called the South Gutter. The field behind the cottages was used, probably before 1650, to farm rabbits and it is possible that one of the cottages was for the 'Warrener' - the rabbit farmer.
