One of the omissions in Blisworth history is a maintained account of the Blisworth Scout Group. There are many photographs taken at places and times that are not recorded. There have been many past Scout and Guide Leaders whose names have "misted over". We hope that ex-villagers will be able to supply some information for some of the gaps.
1ST
BLISWORTH SCOUT GROUP The
scout group is a thriving one, the youngsters amazing and the activities
offered so adventurous even the leaders show signs of nerves.
We are now the venue for an Explorer Unit, this is District based
and caters for the 14-18 year age group.
This together with our hopes of rebuilding the hut has got us to
thinking about the history of the group. We celebrated our 40th
birthday in 2006 (this being the date the group was registered with the
Scout Association) but know there were scouts before this in the
village. Perhaps if you are
reading this you might be able to fill in the gaps. We
have a flagpole that was presented to the scout troop in 1934 and there
is documented evidence that scouts in the village were used as
messengers during the Second World War but that is where the trail ends
until 1966 when the group was officially registered. We
gather from some villagers that in 1961/2 there was no group in the
village and the scouts met at Stoke Bruerne/Shutlanger. We
have plans for the existing hut dated 1985, yet again from conversations
it has been suggested that originally there were 2 pre-fabricated
buildings on the site that were gifted to the boys of the village, again
we have no evidence, so what was on the site prior to the hut?
It
would be really good to discover the history especially when we rebuild
then we could have a permanent record for all to see.
The group has consistently grown over the past 3 years, we have a
dedicated leader team and lots more challenges to undertake a group
worthy of its place in the village. Sandra
O’Connor – Group Scout Leader, September 2009.
